Forgetful fish

Here is a couple of photos taken on a fishing trip with my friend and the most famous fly fisherman and caster in Croatia - Aleksandar Sasa Puskadija. He's a licensed instructor in EFFA (European Fly Fishing Association), from whom you can always learn something useful, not just about fly casting but overall the fishing and journalism. This rainbow was briefly persuaded to bite his fly, and finally took a small dry fly. Few minutes after fish was released back into the river, it was carelessly grabbed flies from the surface, completely forgetting that it was caught about ten minutes earlier. How long the fish remember? Does anyone know a reliable answer? ;) Although there are prejudices that fish remember only a last few seconds, some studies have shown that fish remember the last 3 months, and at the same time very well distinguish between different shapes, colors and sounds. From this we can conclude that this rainbow was very hungry and it was not impressed with the fact that it was just caught by probably the best fly fisherman in Croatia. :)

On the surface

One week after Croatian Bass Spin league has been held at Ivanec lakes, bass were pretty scarred so regular sight-fishing didn't give result as usual. Whatever we trow in area around the fish we saw, only made them scared. It was clear that we need to change the approach, and to target bass hidden in the bush far from the coast. So we got some fish on the silicone lures straight from the branches, but the biggest we caught with  poppers. Two have marked our day. Duo Realis Popper 64 http://www.duo-inc.co.jp/bass/en/realis/popper64/ and new Savage Gear Pop Prey 6.6.

Good choice for trout

Duo Spearhead Ryuki is almost mandatory trout lure in boxes of Croatian spin anglers, especially those who are competitors in Croatian Spinning League. This lure with its large range of colors is great for the most of the predatory fish, and perfect for rainbow and brown trout. Some colors attract trout better than other depending on the clarity of the water, and this pink is proven choice. Here is a nice wild brown trout caught by my friend Ivan and Ryuki size is 50 mm. This was a tough day for fishing because river water was clear like a gin. Trout were very cautious, and even much larger trout can be caught on this part of the river, this one is pretty nice for this conditions.

Signs of a good season at Gacka river

Judging by the first few months of fishing, this will be a great season on the Gacka river. There are plenty of fish, the average size 35-40 cm, but daily you can have a few old big trout over 50 cm. In our two days of weekend fishing, Peki and I caught a lot of fish, mainly on some variations of dark colored jigs and streamers, some with nymphs, and one beautiful 50 cm long rainbow trout took my dry fly. There was a plenty of brown trout. The biggest we got is 45 cm long, and the largest fish of our weekend 55 cm long rainbow just slipped out of my hands and swam in the river, before taking a photo. I can not wait warmer period of the year, which is the most productive on the river because of the intense swarming flies. We stayed in nice and sweet apartments Brajan, 200 meters away from the top fishing position, mouth of the river Kostelka. From there you can walk to all the best places on the river. White and black horse in front of the apartments are only addition to the atmosphere of nature you can enjoy here. So if you need accommodation, we can warmly recommend you this one.  This was my first fishing with new Scierra A.n.t #6 rod, and it perfectly suits to all conditions on Gacka river.

Spring carp fly fishing

photos: Miroslav Vodopija
Spring is the right time to catch carp on the fly
This weekend Miro visited some lakes near the city and caught some wonderful carp on the fly rod.
In this period carp are easy to be located and are often found near the coast in the range of our fly fishing gears.
Carp can be successfully fished with the imitation of various larvae, leeches, corn, bread or boilas ...
Thanks Miro on these beautiful photos, and I'm sure I'll join you at the first opportunity
because this  is a top adrenaline experience that should be repeated each year during the hottest spring days

After a long winter, spring has arrived

Well, after a long winter, spring is here. This was our first bass fishing this year, with a few fish. Since Miro has lost a few good ones, this was the fish of the day... not bad for the beginning of the season. The most of bass are still in the branches, so this one took silicone lure Hulla Grub by Yamamoto. Also we had some attacks to walk the dog surface lures and cranks.

Fishing with confidence

Over the last few years, with more or less success, me and my friends are trying to fish bluefish and sea bass, especially in the winter or early spring period. Bluefish are sometimes elusive and very cautious, often will follow offered lure in the flock, but will not bite it. Sometimes they rise to the surface, then you can successfully fish on a variety of top water models or with streamers and fly rod. But they are more often at the bottom of the sea, and then you need to offer a cheery, sinking lure that will provoke a bite. Duo Tide Minnow 75 Sprint is the lure with whom I have by far the most success in fishing and just contributed to a feeling of self-confidence, that has often been compromised with this "hard to catch on lure" fish. Now, if I know where the flock of smaller sizes bluefish is, my first choice will be Tide Minnow 75 Sprint. Second choice, is somewhat thinner, and thus rapid sinking lure Duo Spearhead Ryuki 80s. Both will promptly react on twitching and jerking rod actions. Allow them to sink to the bottom, and then start to work with the rod. Work in all layers of water, with pauses and sharp strokes with the rod, giving unpredictable action with speed changing and breaks, that will fool the bluefish. Be careful, if the fish size are bigger, they could go with your lure. In this case only steel wire can save it from sharp teeth. Both lures are great for sea bass too, but sometimes you need to reduce intensity of jerking with rod, and be a gentler than with bluefish. Note that both models are widely used in river fishing, about which more will be said later.

Vitunjčica home of big trout 2

An report from Vitunjčica river was one of the first posts here on the blog. My good friend Miroslav Vodopija presented this remarkable river with some nice photos of big trout.
http://fishingincroatia.blogspot.com/2010/02/vitunjcica-home-of-big-trout.html Years after we had a nice trout fishing there, but the last few years we've somehow neglected this river, even Vitunjčica is a great choice for the beginning of the season, and has never disappointed us.
And so it was today. Robi and I have some really nice fish, all rainbow except one brown trout. Best flies for this cold part of the season are always some heavy or goldkopf nymphs. There are short period of surface feeding in the middle of the day, when they will take dry fly. 4 kilometer long river Vitunjčica is hiding some capital trout, so do not be surprised with the trout in the range of  60 - 80 cm. I remember meeting with a large brown trout from which I came out as a loser. On the same place later 94cm long brown trout has been caught! All trout were healthy in excellent condition, so we can warmly recommend this fly fishing destination. And respect Catch & Release regime!
